Directions to Our Practice

If you've never been to our practice before, we can help! Start by taking Main St south out of town. Stay on it when it becomes Hwy 29. From there, two things could happen:

  1. After nearly 20 miles, take the US-29 BUS exit to stay on US-29 S. After another 8 miles, take the Piedmont Dr exit. Watch for us coming up on your right after you pass the Sam's Club on your left. We're at 500 Park Ave, Danville.

  2. The US-29 exit is a little confusing because there are two roads that split off each other with the same name. If you miss the exit and end up staying on the branch of US-29 S that's also called the Danville Expressway, don't worry! Just exit right at the junction with Hwy 58. Continue as that becomes River St, then Riverside Dr. After nearly four miles, you'll turn right onto Westover Dr, then turn right onto Piedmont Dr and you're back on track!

How Much Local History Do You Know?

Gretna, Virginia, with a rich tapestry of history that spans centuries, began its story long before it was formally incorporated in 1901. The town originally known as Elba, saw its early development when Edward N. Dillard transferred land to Jeremiah Talbott as repayment for Talbott serving as Dillard's substitute in the Civil War — a practice common among affluent landowners of that era.

The railroad played a pivotal role in shaping Gretna’s destiny. In 1872, appreciating the economic uplift that the railroad would bring, Jeremiah Talbott granted a right-of-way to the Lynchburg and Danville Railroad. Construction commenced that same year, completing in 1874. The railroad's development continued with the completion of the Franklin & Pittsylvania Railroad in 1879, which established key landmarks like the Franklin Junction, the Elba Post Office, and laid the foundations for Gretna's rich railroad heritage. It was along these tracks that the famed Old 97 train passed through before its notorious wreck in 1903.

In the 1700s, the town's narrative was marked by the establishment of Yates Tavern by Stephen Yates, a Revolutionary War veteran. This tavern, now listed on the National Register of Historic Places, served as a crucial resting spot for travelers. During this period, significant developments such as the division of Pittsylvania and Halifax Counties and the construction of Galveston Mills on Whitethorn Creek also took place.

By the late 1800s, Elba had grown to include its first house, built by Jeremiah Talbott, alongside a hotel, a two-room school, and by 1879, its first church — Elba Methodist/Episcopal Church, later known as Anderson Memorial Church. The town’s spiritual and community life expanded with the establishment of Elba Baptist Church in 1892, later known as First Baptist Church, and the founding of the Anderson Lodge #258 A.F. and A.M. in 1894.

On March 21, 1914, the town adopted the name Gretna, inspired by the romantic Scottish town of Gretna Green. Over the ensuing decades, Gretna has flourished into a welcoming, small southern town, known for its singular stoplight, home-style meals, and warm, friendly residents. It remains a hub of potential economic development due to its strategic location at the juncture of Routes 29 and 40.
