How Much Local History Do You Know?
Martinsville, VA boasts a rich history that is deeply rooted in its early days and has evolved significantly through the centuries. Founded by Joseph Martin, a notable figure from the American Revolutionary War and an explorer, the city has connections to influential historical figures including Patrick Henry, a revolutionary patriot for whom the neighboring Henry County is named. Martin established his plantation, Scuffle Hill, near the banks of the Smith River, which still marks the southern limits of today’s city.
The 20th century marked a period of significant industrial growth for Martinsville. In 1941, DuPont established a large plant for manufacturing nylon textiles, vital for the war effort during World War II. The presence of this plant not only contributed to the local economy but also positioned Martinsville as a strategic target during the Cold War. By mid-century, Martinsville had become a hub for textile production, famously known as the "Sweatshirt Capital of the World." The city was also noted for its unusually high number of millionaires per capita in the 1980s.
Another landmark event in the city’s history was the opening of the Martinsville Speedway in 1947. This paperclip-shaped oval track has been a staple in NASCAR since its inaugural season in 1949 and remains the shortest oval track in the NASCAR circuit today.
The local community also saw significant civic improvements in the mid-20th century. Business leader Whitney Shumate spearheaded efforts to enhance living conditions in an area known as "Mill Town," characterized by substandard housing initially built for 19th-century cotton mill workers. These efforts transformed a once depressed area into a thriving middle-class neighborhood, significantly improving the quality of life for its residents.
However, the early 1990s brought challenges with global economic changes and new trade agreements, making traditional industries like textiles and furniture manufacturing unsustainable. This led to a significant downturn, with many businesses closing and jobs moving offshore. In response, Martinsville has been making strides towards repositioning itself as a center for technology development and manufacturing in recent years.
Healthcare has been a cornerstone of the Martinsville community, with Memorial Hospital of Martinsville, now part of Sovah Health with the hospital in Danville, serving the greater Martinsville and Henry County area. The first local hospital, Shackelford Hospital, was founded by Dr. Jesse Martin Shackelford, a pioneer in the state’s healthcare scene. The hospital legacy continued with Martinsville General and later, Memorial Hospital of Martinsville, which opened its doors in 1970.
Today, Martinsville is a city that honors its historical roots while actively shaping its future, making it a compelling place for both residents and visitors alike.
