A Slice of Local History

South Boston's origins date back to December 8, 1796, when the Virginia General Assembly appointed eight commissioners to establish the town on the south side of the Dan River at Boyd's Ferry, naming it after Boston, Massachusetts. Due to frequent flooding, the early settlers relocated to the more stable north side of the river. By the mid-19th century, the Richmond and Danville Railroad had made its way through the town, bolstering South Boston's status as a key market for brightleaf tobacco. The town was officially incorporated in 1884 and became an independent city in 1960. In a historic move in 1995, South Boston chose to revert to town status and rejoin Halifax County, becoming the first city in Virginia to do so.

Today, South Boston is proud of its rich history and its contributions to the region's heritage. Notable sites such as Berry Hill Plantation, the E. L. Evans House, and the South Boston Historic District are recognized on the National Register of Historic Places, showcasing the town's architectural and historical significance. Nearby, properties like Fourqurean House and Glennmary add to the local charm.

Historically, South Boston was a vibrant hub for the tobacco industry, hosting the National Tobacco Festival from 1935 until 1941, and briefly resuming after World War II until 1948, when the festival moved to Richmond. Once the second largest tobacco producer in the U.S., the town played a significant role in the tobacco trade until the economic shifts of the Great Depression. Today, South Boston honors this heritage while looking forward to a future of growth and community development.
